10 New Oceania Alaska Cruises

Starting May, 2011, Oceania Cruises will celebrate its inaugural season by offering 10 new sailings through Alaska with 3 promotions including:

• Per state room savings of $1,000 off cruise fares

• $1,000 shipboard credit on top of two-for-one prices

The four itineraries include:

Majestic Alaska

Carnival Cruise Line Newest Promotion

Carnival Cruise Line’s newest promotion incorporates its cash back options, best available upgrades and “Fun Select” rates on three- to eight-day cruises departing from August 2010 through February 2011.
 
Including voyages to The Bahamas, Caribbean, Mexico, Alaska and Hawaii, passengers can take advantage of the promotion running July 12-30.

Upon boarding, guests will be automatically receive a shipboard credit that can be applied to purchases on the ship.

On three- to five-day cruises, guests will get up to $80 per state room; on six- or longer-day trips up to $160 per state room. Any unused credit will be received at the end of the cruise in the form of a check.

Best available upgrades can be used on new individual books for categories 4A and higher and are available within specific room accommodation types (for example, interior to interior, ocean view to ocean view, balcony to balcony).

"Fun Select" rates give guests their state room based on deck, location and accommodation category.

Alaska Cruises Can't Meet Proposed Pollution Limits

The cruise industry is not happy with the new pollution limits for ships that could go in effect in Alaska later this year.

The Juneau Empire today reports an industry representative told a public hearing that more than half of the cruise vessels operating in the state would not be able to meet new limits for the pollutant ammonia that are part of proposed wastewater rules for 2010.

The news outlet says Alaska Cruise Association consultant Mike Tibbles argued the limits are too strict in general and there's not enough time for the industry to comply before the start of the Alaska season in a few months.

Spirit of Alaska Hits Bottom - Ends Voyage

Cruise West's Spirit of Alaska transferred its 41 passengers to another vessel June 5 after scraping the bottom in Tracy Arm early June 4 in Alaska.

The company said the 78-passenger vessel "briefly touched bottom during the process of getting under way after anchoring overnight in the vicinity of Williams Cove near Tracy Arm." The company reported no injuries to passengers or 22 crew members, nor any threat to marine life or the environment.

The U.S. Coast Guard received a call from the Spirit of Alaska requesting assistance. The ship reported unknown damage affecting its rudder, the Coast Guard said in a statement.

The Coast Guard sent a 47-foot motor lifeboat, a helicopter and the cutter Liberty to the scene. In addition, the Coast Guard deployed an inspector and investigator to the vessel to assess damage. An investigation is standard practice following the unintentional grounding of any commercial vessel.

Cruise West said the ship proceeded to Juneau under its own power, arriving at approximately 1:30 a.m. June 5.

Guests had breakfast onboard the ship and were to transfer to another Cruise West vessel, Spirit of Endeavour, to depart Juneau on a nine-day cruise of Alaska's Inside Passage.

Holland America Offers 250 Alaska Shore Excursions

Holland America Line has added new shore excursions in Alaska for a total of more than 250 excursions offered in 2008.

In Haines, a new tour called "Guide's Choice Photo Discovery" focuses on photographing the wildlife and scenery of the Chilkat Valley. A professional photographer escorts a small group to a choice location and helps guests set up shots.

In Skagway, a new "Golden Glassblowing Experience" takes guests to a glass-blowing shop to blow their own glass art with Alaskan gold incorporated into the design. For a different view of Alaska, snorkeling is offered in Sitka and Ketchikan. Typically a warm-water sport, a wetsuit or dry suit provides protection while participants explore the underwater wilderness of Southeast Alaska accompanied by a narrated tour.

Fans of the Discovery Channel's show "Deadliest Catch," highlighting Alaska's crab fishing industry, might be interested in the "Bering Sea Crab Fisherman's Tour" in Ketchikan. Guests set out on the Aleutian Ballad -- the same vessel as seen on the show but modified for comfort and safety -- with real fisherman who will set and pull pots for an inside look into their life.

A new Ketchikan excursion called "Exclusive Mountaintop Flightseeing and Crab Feast" combines a flight on a floatplane to the George Inlet Lodge.

Another new tour in Ketchikan is "An Alaskan Chef's Table." A five-course tasting menu highlighting Alaska's sustainable bounty is served in a private club room overlooking the harbor. The chef will share stories, tips and secrets for brining, grilling, roasting and smoking.
