Deadly Floods in Central Europe Cancel River Cruises

River cruise lines continue to cancel departures and change itineraries in Central Europe due to floods.

The town of Passau, Germany, at the confluence of three rivers and popular on many river cruise itineraries, was submerged by the worst flooding in five centuries. Local news outlets reported 12 deaths.

Uniworld Boutique River Cruise Collection cancelled the June 16 “European Jewels” departure on the River Empress. The ship was currently in Budapest and unable to get to Amsterdam by June 16. Previously cancelled were the June 7 departures of the River Ambassador on the “Grand Danube & Prague” and “Danube Discovery & Prague” trips and the June 9 “Enchanting Danube” cruise on the River Beatrice. Guests will receive a $500-per-person future cruise credit whether they rebook or cancel. Uniworld said it expects to operate all other cruises scheduled to depart June 10-16 due to “careful planning by our European operation team (and in some cases with us swapping ships).”

Scenic Cruises said four ships were in dock waiting for the river levels to drop. “The Rhine, Main and Main-Danube Canal may be navigable again by mid-week. The stretch between Kelheim and Melk is expecting to reopen by this weekend,” Scenic said in a statement. “These estimates are provided by the waterways authorities who dictate whether or not navigation is possible and if ships must remain docked.” Scenic Cruises is part of Scenic Tours, a large Australian tour operator, so guests continued their vacations on the company’s luxury coaches, which took them to scheduled excursions and exclusive events.

Previously, Avalon Waterways cancelled five cruises and is offering a full refund and $500 credit. Two June 7 departures were cancelled—the “Blue Danube Discovery” and “Jewels of Central Europe,” both on Avalon Luminary. Also cancelled is the June 8 departure of “Magnificent Europe” aboard the Avalon Tranquility, the June 9 departure of “Magnificent Europe” on Avalon Vista and the June 10 departure of “Austrian Highlights & Bavaria” on the Avalon Affinity. The company previously cancelled the June 2 departure of the “Legendary Danube” cruise aboard the Avalon Visionary.

Viking River Cruises cancelled the June 9 “Romantic Danube” sailing on Viking Prestige and the June 9 “Danube Waltz” departure of the Viking Legend. The company is sending guests and their travel agents email notifications and is offering a $500 credit to rebook on another cruise or a full refund and a $500 per person future cruise credit. For details, call 877-523-0579 from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific time Monday through Friday or 818-216-2453 after hours. Viking also changed the itineraries and ships on 16 other cruises, saying guests will be met at the airport and transferred to the appropriate vessel, regardless of whether they purchased transfers from Viking. In addition, a Viking representative will also be stationed at the original port of embarkation to transport guests to the correct vessel or hotel in some cases.

Tauck cancelled the May 30 and June 6 departures of “The Blue Danube” cruise and will provide refunds. Departures currently operating include the June 2 “Amsterdam to Budapest by Riverboat” and the June 2 “Grand European Cruise.” If those itineraries change, guests can choose to remain onboard or depart early with a full refund.

AmaWaterways said June 3 that it has not cancelled any cruises and is operating on schedule. Avalon said disruptions have been minimal in some cases. “For example there are Avalon ships on either side of the Main-Danube Canal and we have been able to ‘swap’ vessels and transfer passengers from one ship to another so they could continue sailing,” the line posted. “In other instances, we have combined partial sailings with hotel stays. In virtually all instances, the ports, excursions and highlights are being visited or experienced by our guests. We are also providing our travelers compensation depending upon the number of cruising days that may have been affected.”

Avalon Waterways Adds Three More Suite River Ships

Avalon Waterways is adding to the surge in river ship new builds, announcing it will bring three new vessels into service in 2014.

Avalon Impression, Avalon Illumination and Avalon Poetry II will bring the line's total number of suite ships to eight.

The three ships represent the line's single biggest fleet upgrade since Avalon launched in 2004. They will be sister ships to Avalon Artistry II and Avalon Expression, which are debuting in April and May of this year.

Avalon Waterways is the third line in as many months to announce expansions to its fleet of river cruise ships.

In December 2012, Viking River Cruises ordered 10 more Longships for its fleet for delivery in 2013 and 2014. And in January of this year, Tauck announced it will welcome two new river ships into its fleet in 2014.

Conde Nast Traveler's 2012 Cruise Guide - All-star stretches along five storied European rivers—the Danube, the Main, the Rhine, the Moselle and the Seine.

Danube

Austria

Danube - The second-longest river on the Continent and one of its busiest, the Danube begins in the mountains of Germany’s Black Forest and weaves 1,770 miles southeast through eight other countries and four capital cities to the Black Sea.

Germany

Main - One of the Rhine’s largest tributaries, the Main flows through the forests of Germany’s enchanting southwest. The water turns terra-cotta as it passes through the mineral-rich Spessart hills. Foxes, boars and other wildlife are easily spotted beneath the towering oaks onshore.

Moselle - The 350-mile Moselle intersects with the Main and Rhine in Koblenz before zigzagging its way southwest through Germany, along the Luxembourg border, and into northeastern France.

Rhine - The twelfth-longest river in Europe and one of the most trafficked, the Rhine flows from the eastern Swiss Alps to the North Sea.

France

Seine - Beginning near Dijon, in northeast France, the Seine flows some 500 miles—through the French capital, west to Normandy, and into a pastoral landscape so beguiling that few French painters could resist its charms.

Melodies of the Danube

First-time river cruisers often take European cruises to cities they have dreamed about visiting for years, or to see fairytale-like destinations they’ve read about in history books. As such, Danube River cruises are among the most popular.

In the spotlight this month is “Melodies of the Danube,” an AmaWaterways (www.amawaterways.com) journey. This voyage is offered this summer and fall on AmaCerto, AmaLegro and AmaLyra.

Many other river cruise lines including Avalon Waterways (www.avalonwaterways.com), Tauck (www.tauck.com), Viking River Cruises (www.vikingrivercruises), Uniworld (www.uniworld.com) and others also offer their own variations of this Danube itinerary.

American Queen Arrives in Memphis for Christening

The Great American Steamboat Company’s American Queen arrived in its home port of Memphis after her first voyage up the Mississippi River since 2008.

Originally built in 1995 by the Delta Queen Steamboat Company, the American Queen can accomodate 436-guests.

The U.S.-flagged steamboat was welcomed to the revitalized Beale Street Landing marking the return of overnight cruises on the rivers of America’s heartland and the continuation of the Delta Queen Steamboat Company legacy.

As the American Queen approached downtown Memphis, it was met by the city’s residents and family members of the crew. The Great American Steamboat Company hired over 300 employees from the area, including the steamboat crew, and an economic impact of $89 million is anticipated for the region.

After the christening, the American Queen will depart for her inaugural voyage up the Mississippi River to the Ohio River with stops in Henderson, Ky., Louisville, Ky., and Madison, Ind., before arriving in her disembarkation city of Cincinnati, Ohio.

On May 2 in Louisville, she  will take part in the Kentucky Derby Festival’s Great Steamboat Race with the Belle of Louisville and Belle of Cincinnati.

A variety of voyage lengths, ranging from three nights to ten nights, and fares beginning at $995 per guest, are available with little or no flying required.

Florida River Cruising via American Cruise Lines

American Cruise Lines specializes in a unique style of small ship cruising along the inland waterways and rivers of the United States.

There’s more to the Sunshine State than theme parks, beaches and blue-water cruising. If you love cruising, and desire close-to-home voyages that don’t require the purchase of international air tickets, you might want to take a look at a relaxing cruise along Florida’s St. Johns River, Tolomato River and Intracoastal Waterway.

American Cruise Line operates a "Great Rivers of Florida" itinerary along these waterways in northeastern Florida.

The cruise is so popular the line plans 12 departures this year, including Thanksgiving and Christmas cruises. Guests sail on the 49-passenger American Glory, a small ship built in 2002. The vessel has 31 staterooms and offers a unique, modern style of cruising.

ITINERARY HIGHLIGHTS

Day 1: Guests embark American Glory at Amelia Island, FL (www.ameliaisland.com). The closest airport is Jacksonville International Airport. Once guests are onboard, the ship sails for Palatka along the slow moving waters of the St. Johns River, one of 14 designated American Heritage Rivers in the U.S. and only one of three that flows north.

What to stress to eco-enthusiasts? The area is a hot spot for birdwatching as it's home to more than 200 species of birds including bald eagles, wood storks and swallowtail kites.

Day 2: While today Palatka certainly isn’t a household name throughout the U.S., it was in the late 1800s when timber and citrus created a boomtown. In fact, Palatka rivaled Jacksonville as the St. Johns River’s major port. So, many wealthy northerners built grand homes or plantation mansions in the area. On a port call on Day 2, cruisers might take a Palatka city-mural tour to view the city’s artistic murals and visit the Bronson Mulholland House, a historic Greek revival plantation home. Another shore trip option is a visit to Blue Springs State Park.

Day 3: American Glory continues cruising the St. Johns to the freshwater Lake George, bordered on its west bank by Ocala National Forest (www.fs.usda.gov/ocala), the oldest national forest east of the Mississippi River. The lake itself is home to migratory birds, alligators, blue crabs, the Atlantic stingray and striped bass.

Day 4: Warm mineral springs and historic architecture are the draw during the vessel's port call at Green Cove Springs, FL. During the 1800s, steamboats brought such VIPs as President Abraham Lincoln, circus magnate P.T. Barnum and President Grover Cleveland south to Green Cove Springs in search of a warm winter retreat and springs with reputed medicinal qualities. Cruisers might take a carriage tour to view historic homes, the courthouse and a restored theater.

Day 5: American Glory cruises the Tolomato River for the day. Cruisers will view the Atlantic Ocean, which is visible over the Intracoastal’s barrier islands. A naturalist will provide commentary as the ship passes eco-sights and small villages.

Day 6: Cruisers might take a cruise-line shore excursion (a tram ride) through the Old City of St. Augustine (www.oldcity.com), established in 1565 by the Spanish. Scenic views include the massive Castillo de San Marcos Spanish fortress, architecture created by railroad baron Henry Flagler, and narrow streets that were once the center of Spanish rule in the southeastern U.S.

Day 7: Last port call is at Fernandina Beach on Amelia Island, FL; the quaint Historic District comprises 50 blocks of Victorian homes, antique shops and historic sites. Guests may choose a shore trip that’s a walking tour of the sites, or, alternatively, explore the island’s backwaters and Eagan Creek on a narrated river boat cruise.

Day 8: Disembarkation on Amelia Island. Amelia Island offers Amelia Island Plantation, Villas and a number of nice hotels and bed and breakfast options.

Viking River Cruises Celebrates 15th Anniversary

Viking River Cruises ( www.vikingrivercruises.com ) marks its 15th anniversary in 2012, the world's leading river cruise line is planning the biggest year in its history.

Founded in 1997, Viking River Cruises was established with four Russian river cruise vessels and a company name to honor the Vikings that first traveled by longship to explore Russia's waterways.

Today, Viking owns and operates the world's largest fleet of river vessels, and 2012 will see the launch of six new Viking Longships--an industry first--as well as the completion of its Russian fleet refurbishment.

On March 21, 2012 in Amsterdam, Viking will christen four of the six Viking Longships - Viking Njord, Viking Odin, Viking Idun and Viking Freya.

A historic event, the christening will mark the first time in history that four cruise ships will be christened at once. After departing from Amsterdam, the Viking Longships will sail Viking's most popular European itineraries including the 15-day Grand European Tour, 8-day Romantic Danube, 8-day Danube Waltz and 10-day Tulips & Windmills.

Joining their sister ships, two more Viking Longships - Viking Embla and Viking Aegir - will make their debut in July and August 2012, respectively. And given unprecedented demand, Viking is reviewing its new build program for 2013 and 2014.
